Vacation planning for Canadians
Summer is FAST approaching this Canadians’ locale and that means vacation planning. But not just any vacation planning, planning for all things summer. Everything you want to do and everything you need to do, to enjoy what little summer there will be before getting hit with another winter slump a couple months later.
Summer is far to short lived to go in unprepared. Sadly, many of us (myself explicitly included) don’t plan ahead and attempt to live for the moment. Which usually ends up being last minute dashes to the lake or beach, and too much time thinking about what you could do, while doing nothing you want to do. Bummer.
Being April 1st, and after noon this is no joke, just foresight. Plan ahead for all things you want to do, and make a date to do them. If you plan ahead, you won’t miss out. I don’t mean plan to cut the grass or anything (but you probably have to do that anyway, as grass does grow), but plan the fun things, and even the non fun things you keep meaning to get to.
Can’t think of anything?
How about these 10 things to do on your summer vacation:
Fun things to do on your summer vacation:
- Go camping with your son.
- Bike to the park a few evenings a week.
- Play some Wii Sports when the weather is not perfect.
- Restore an old car.
- Brew your own beer.
Useful things to do on your summer vacation (but not as fun):
- Re-shingle your garage.
- Repair your living room ceiling.
- Build a shelf in your bathroom (your toothbrush will thank-you).
- Clean out the basement.
- Plant a garden AND maintain it (weeds know when your sleeping).
Procrastination Alert!
When will you have time to do all that?
Simple. You make the time. Plan ahead, like now, and you have no excuse not to have the time to do everything you want to do with your summer vacation.
But dude, I’m not a kid, I don’t get summer vacation!
DUDE!. MINI-VACATIONS. No need to book weeks off work. You can do it all in the evenings and on weekends. Have your cake and eat it too (whatever that means).
Bottom line?
Stop dreaming. Start doing.
Okay, that being said, the next questions is, why the heck did I write all that on a blog that is totally unrelated to vacation planning or self help? I am taking some time off, that’s why. Over the last 7 years or so, my main focus has always been work. Before I started my own business I worked 2 jobs, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Then my own business become quite good, and I quit my second job. Now I have a great career and a great business (that’s the cake thing again) that now consume my 7/365.
Problem is, I’m tired.
Even when I have tried to take off a few days here and there, I usually end up doing some work here and there (email mostly) and I am always thinking about work. I think over the past 7 years I have officially had a grand total of 15, maybe 20, full days off where I was not working or thinking about work at all. 20 days out of 2,555 is a pretty poor average.
Time for a well deserved vacation. 5 months to be exact.
May 1, 2008 Creative Compulsions will be scaling back operations. I will not be shutting down, just bringing it down to doing a few selected projects here and there, along with minor maintenance tasks as needed. Everything on my vacation planning list above is what I am going to focus on this summer.
Business will return to normal October 1, 2008 with renewed vigour and more importantly, renewed creativity. When the name of your business is Creative Compulsions, you better have creativity in spades. A vacation will ensure I maintain that level.
Make sure you plan your vacation today.
Myles
