The Modern Prairie FatherApril 15, 2026
In Manitoba, Father’s Day arrives at precisely the right moment. The prairies are free from winter (usually), the lakes are calling out to us and the evenings finally stretch long past dinner. Fresh-cut grass and the familiar scents of barbecues come drifting over backyard fences. This is not a day designed for formal suits and ties. It’s the day for fresh air, good food and a slow relaxed pace.Continue readingThe Modern Prairie Father

Swinging in Souris ManitobaJune 1, 2022
My first trip to Souris Manitoba was a bit of a memorable one. It was the first time the wife and I went on an actual ride together for more than an hour and it was...pretty weird. I cannot remember what month it was but it was a warm, extremely bright, and sunny morning when we left home in Winnipeg, then 30 minutes later it started raining. Then it started snowing. When we rode home I had to stuff a couple of ice-cold bottles of water in my jacket to cool off from the heat. Weird, right?Continue readingSwinging in Souris Manitoba

The Catfish Capital of the World – Selkirk ManitobaJune 30, 2021
Selkirk Manitoba is the home of Chuck the Channel Cat, a large catfish statue that hangs out at the local Smitty’s. Selkirk is roughly 20km (12 miles) north of Winnipeg along Highway 9. Known as “The Catfish Capital of the World" because of the record-sized catches on the local stretch of the Red River. The roughly 30-foot tall catfish was erected in 1986 and is named for local fisherman Chuck Norquay.Continue readingThe Catfish Capital of the World – Selkirk Manitoba

The Multiple Municipal Monuments of WinnipegMay 22, 2021
Manitoba has nearly 2,400 monuments in all areas of the province but only 42 of them carry the municipal monument designation. An exclusive honour reserved for the most important historic sites.Continue readingThe Multiple Municipal Monuments of Winnipeg
Lockport ManitobaOctober 24, 2020
Lockport Manitoba is roughly 30km North of Winnipeg. For me it is so close to home it practically is home. A leisurely ride down River Road then back down Henderson Highway is how I start and end every riding season.Continue readingLockport Manitoba

Lundar ManitobaSeptember 22, 2020

McBeth HouseAugust 31, 2020
McBeth House was continuously inhabited by members of the family until 1984 (long, long time ownership) before the land and house were donated to the city of Winnipeg. It has been operating as a seniors resource centre ever since and is available to be booked for gatherings and events. A plaque at the front drive was placed on a monument built from the stone used in the original log cabin building and was unveiled in September 1987 to highlight the history of the McBeth House. The Long Road HomeAugust 5, 2020
A question came in asking for a route to get from Brandon Manitoba to Teulon Manitoba for a couple of riders. They needed it quickly too.Continue readingThe Long Road Home
Breathe in the WhiteshellJuly 23, 2020
The Whiteshell is a large provincial park on the eastern edge of Manitoba with a large variety of lakes, campgrounds, and towns to enjoy. Cottage country is the best way to describe it. Go West, Young ManJune 10, 2020
I rarely have a route planned when I ride. I enjoy being totally random, stopping anywhere, turning any time, going wherever I fancy. Though thinking beyond local Manitoba motorcycle tourism there are riders who come from out of province (and country) that want to see as much as possible as fast as possible.Continue readingGo West, Young Man
Winnipeg Beach – Not Just a Beach TownJune 3, 2020
I ride north from Winnipeg more often than not. Familiar roads with familiar places. It could be my chosen route because I went that way often when I was young or it maybe it could just be that north is the quickest road out of Winnipeg for me.Continue readingWinnipeg Beach – Not Just a Beach Town
A Dinosaur Named BruceMay 20, 2020
Manitoba is not exactly a hotbed of sweet ancient dino action but we do have our fair share in the valley areas. Certainly enough to promote it with a giant Mossasaur statue on a town sign. At least the city of Morden thinks so, and I agree. Continue readingA Dinosaur Named Bruce
