I need to rant.
Every now and then I like to “browse” the competition to see what others are doing and charging. I like to know I am being competitive.
Wow, sometimes things just blow me away.
If you find a designer or company that charges huge fee’s but has top quality, outstanding work that’s leaves you totally impressed with their work, keep them and pay their fee. Consider it well spent. If you find a place that gives you that quality of work, without the huge cost, consider yourself lucky. Diamonds are hard to find.
I say this because since day 1 I have made sure I give my absolute best to every client, while charging my absolute least. Not rich, but I have a lot of happy customers.
I mention this not to brag, nor to flog my services (although I can since it is my blog). I say this because when I check out the competition, I am frequently shocked by the amounts other companies charge for their work, and the less than stellar quality of that work.
I checked out 2 of my competitors this past week. 1 in the US and 1 in the UK.
The UK company, has only 3 sites in the portfolio, all look very much the same, and are not very professional. However, the companies own page, was awesome. Too bad they did not put that much effort into their clients sites. What shocked me was the pricing guide they give on their site. A very basic “package” from them, was 3x more than what I have EVER charged any client for any type of site. Good lord, are people willing to pay that?
The US company, had a bland and unappealing site for themselves, but a good sized portfolio of clients. A couple of the clients sites, were pretty decent. Very professional. Most were nothing to write home about. Many were almost identical to one another. Again, I check their price structure, and for web mastering, they were right on with what I would charge. But for general design, again 3x more that I have ever charged for anything. Just for the bare bones basics too. I do not question whether people pay that for the service, as they have enough clients to prove people pay it. I do question why people pay it. Too much for too little.
IF you are one of those people paying thousands of $$ for a site that is simple, unappealing, and not unique, keep me bookmarked. I can do better for less.
